A broad range of aesthetic procedures — from surgery to lasers, light-based therapies and injectables — can result in blindness, or vision loss, according to Wendy W. Lee, M.D., associate professor of clinical ophthalmology and dermatology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Fla.
Dr. Lee talked about different causes of visual impairment and ways to avoid potential ocular complications from aesthetic procedures yesterday at the Global Aesthetics Conference, in Miami Beach, Fla.
These are her tips:
When it comes to surgery, Dr. Lee says, “Be conservative when operating around the eyelids and take careful measurements in order to avoid removing too much skin. Preserve the function of the eyelids, which is to protect the globe.”
For lasers and lights: “Ensure appropriate protective eye wear for everyone in the room, including the patient and the provider. Do not move or reposition eye goggles during a treatment,” she says.
Injectables: “Inject conservatively, slowly, and in small amounts. Know your facial anatomy and the danger zones of vasculature that can lead to permanent blindness. Be aware of your patient’s symptoms. Stop if there is any concern,” Dr. Lee says.
