Noninvasive body countouring treatments are attracting more male patients, according to recent figures.
Men accounted for only 9 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. However, one surgeon who commented in an article in the Los Angeles Times noted that almost half of his patients undergoing body contouring are men. Grant Stevens, M.D., a plastic surgeon in Marina del Rey, Calif., told the paper that 43 percent of his body-contouring patients are men seeking treatment for bilateral overhangs of fat and gynecomastia.
What’s more, these procedures are bringing in new patients who have never undergone a cosmetic procedure and turning them into repeat customers. In a study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal in July, Dr. Stevens reported that 62 percent of 528 patients who underwent cryolipolysis treatment from January 2010 to December 2012 had not undergone any previous cosmetic procedure, but 40 percent became established patients, undergoing additional procedures, including surgical, nonsurgical injectable treatment, skincare, laser hair removal and resurfacing treatments, according to the study.
Dr. Stevens also reported that the male patient population grew over the course of the study, ultimately comprising 42 percent of the patient population in the last quarter of 2012. In this respect, he suggested the particular procedure could generate a steady and significant business growth.
