EON from Dominion Aesthetic Technologies, Inc. (Houston, Texas) is recognized as the world’s first robotic, non-invasive, no-touch body contouring platform. FDA cleared for full abdominal fat reduction, the device recently received clearance for the flanks as well, rounding out approval to treat the entire circumference of the waist for patients with a BMI of 30 or less.
According to Thomas Fiala, MD, a plastic surgeon from Altamonte Springs, Fla., and lead author of a study of EON for the flanks, the device uses the well-understood and reliable 1064 nm diode laser, which is safe for all skin types and known for its ability to heat fat deeply and evenly.1 “In a clinical setting, one would treat twice at six-week intervals and see the results develop as the body clears away the fat over the course of about three months,” Dr. Fiala reported. “Each area takes about 20 minutes.”
In the investigation, patients (n=11) were treated on each flank. Ultrasound measurements taken at baseline and 12 weeks after treatment showed an average thickness reduction of 6.1 mm with a single treatment.
“FDA clearance for the flanks is the natural progression from our original full-abdominal clearance, providing our physician partners and their patients with more capabilities, thus adding value,” said Christian Bloomgren, Dominion’s president. “The majority of body contouring concerns are focused on the waist, whether it is men looking for a more masculine V-shape or women seeking the hourglass figure. Treatment of the flanks along with the abdomen is an important part of that. Additionally, the flanks study and clearance more firmly establish the safety and efficacy of the device for other body parts.”
Built-in sensors monitor tissue temperature during treatment to help EON achieve and maintain the ideal temperature range for fat disruption in addition to reading anatomical topography to guide the robotic arm itself. Beyond the ‘wow’ factor, the robotic arm serves the practical purpose of performing a consistent and accurate treatment. “The device uses its sensors and proprietary on-board cold air jet cooling to keep the skin surface temperature at or below 39.5°, promoting patient comfort,” Dr. Fiala explained. “The robotic arm never gets tired of treating exactly where it should, the way it should.” And, “patients are impressed with the comfort level, likening it to ‘lying in the sun on a breezy day.’ Some patients have even fallen asleep. Moreover, there is no need for goopy gels or consumable pads.”
The lack of consumables is a big plus as well. “It makes economic sense for the practitioner, especially when comparing EON to something like CoolSculpting,” said Dr. Fiala. “You don’t have to worry about running out of supplies or re-ordering with enough lead time, and there are no additional supply costs.” Also, set up for treatment is very straightforward, he added. “You simply position the treatment head close to the skin so the cooling system can do its job.
Next up: the arms, thighs and back, according to Mr. Bloomgren. “We are looking forward to proving that EON can do the job as safely and effectively as it does for the abdomen and flanks.
