Adrienne Stewart, MD, a dermatologist in Denver, Colo. had seen Michael Gold, MD, present on this versatile device for acne and acne scars at a conference, and was impressed with its capabilities. "Before we had ADVATx my acne patients wanted acne and scars treated simultaneously, but most of the time we needed to clear their acne first, then work on the scars," she began. "But using the 589 nm laser for acne and redness, and the 1319 nm for treating collagen, scarring and enlarged pores, we can treat both in the same session with ADVATx.” Dr. Stewart also uses ADVATx for rosacea, anti-aging, vascularity and pigment, anything in the realm of anti-aging. “We treat all ages of patients with ADVATx.”
ADVATx, in a sense, supplants the pulsed-dye laser by treating a similar range of conditions and beyond, without consumables or the periodic need to deal with toxic dye kits. Additionally, it goes past the scope of intense pulsed light (IPL) due to the hyper-selectivity of the wavelengths and the proprietary delivery mechanism. Its PulSync technology refers to the ability of ADVATx to combine beams from two laser modules, each emitted through a YAG (yttrium-aluminum-garnet) crystal and then combined. The dual beam is passed through a shared Q-switch to a non-linear (LBO) crystal which combines them to generate the 589 nm beam. The 1319 nm laser can be used by itself as the situation demands.
Either can be delivered as a single spot or in a scanned pattern to treat with little or no pain, side effects or downtime. “ADVATx is a very comfortable and easy treatment for all but the most sensitive patients,” Dr. Stewart expressed. “And while there may be some swelling with other lasers you can usually walk out the door and resume normal activities, so it is very good for many busy patients.” To reduce the need for cooling or anesthesia, laser energy delivered via scanning does not dwell over a single spot.
Changes to the scanning pattern or other treatment parameters – which can be input by the user or selected from a series of presets – can be performed on the fly. The combination of safety and ease of use makes treatment more comfortable for more than just the patient. “As sophisticated as ADVATx is, it is incredibly easy to use, and while I can do it, I usually delegate it to trained laser technicians, which is legal for this device in my state of Colorado,” Dr. Stewart explained.
“We also like to combine ADVATx with other therapies for the best overall endpoint, especially for scarring, which you can do because it is relatively gentle,” she continued. “We often use it with a picosecond laser or RF microneedling, or even fractional non-ablative lasers. Everybody’s skin is different so we can use it for many of their issues, alone or in combination, with the benefit of two wavelengths in one device.”
